What is First Crack?
Green Coffee Beans carry a lot of character. First Crack is the most important phase in coffee roasting wherein the bean characteristics start to develop into a consumable flavor profile.
We call ourselves First Crack as we intend to place ourselves at the juncture of translating the rich unique natural flavors of our carefully selected high-grown single-estate coffee beans into a palatable experience for our consumers.
It’s the roasting process that produces the chemical reactions of these components to create the flavors we all love so much.
What do we do
At First Crack, our focus starts from choosing the right green beans from the high altitude estates to roast each lot based on their specific characteristics to finally deliver well developed, balanced coffees with the best aromas and flavor notes to your cups.
We select Green Coffee beans grown in Higher Altitudes, due to the better concentration of flavors and vibrancy they offer. In these regions, the berries undergo a longer maturation process, which gives the raw coffee beans more complex, pronounced, distinct and deeper flavors. With our roasting methods, we intend to enhance and deliver these exceptional flavor profiles to your cup.
First Crack follows a Farm-2-Cup, Farmer-Direct approach wherein we source our raw coffee directly from estates to ensure quality of our products and transparency for our customers along with maintaining end-to-end fair trade practices
What is the Roaster's role
The quality of the green coffee bean is the first and most important ingredient for a good cup of Coffee. The role of a Roaster is equally important for delivering the true elegance of that bean to your palate.
A Roaster should understand the inherent bean characteristics of each lot before each roast. Incase of Single-Estate Coffees, a lot comprises uniform variety of green beans processed in a specific method from an estate’s harvest. Factors like bean origin, soil condition, climate, altitude, bean variety, processing method, moisture content and bean density have to be considered to design the perfect roast profiles.
Roasting is a beautiful blend of art and science, and a roaster has to understand all the intricacies in order to fine-tune the roasting process to perfection. The key to roasting a perfect coffee depends on metrics like rate of temperature rise, airflow, development time and roast degree during the roasting process. A roaster has to have absolute control and precision over these variables to strike the right balance between various notes and deliver well developed balanced coffees consistently.
To sum it up, a skilled Roaster is an artist who handcrafts unique coffees of the finest quality with great finesse and creativity.
